Developing for web with Rails and Node.js

Simple Development Web Server Setup on Linux

| Comments

When you develop a Ruby on Rails application, you want to be able to reach it through your browser. This can be done via constantly open console window with rails server of course. But if you want to access your development website through short and meaningfull URL like http://myapp.dev, than you have to play with /etc/hosts and add virtual server into your web server configuration file. Here is more simple and convinient way.

Prax is a Rack proxy server for development. Install is super easy:

1

$ git clone git://github.com/ysbaddaden/prax.git
$ cd prax/
$ bin/prax install
$ bin/prax start

Now just link your application to ~/.prax folder. And that’s all!

$ cd ~/.prax
$ ln -s ~/Work/myapp .
$ firefox http://myapp.dev

For the reference – Prax was developed as GNU/Linux alternative for Pow, which is available on Mac only.
